Sleepy Dog

by Harriet Ziefert, illustrated by Norman Gorbaty

When my kids were growing up, I must’ve read this book to them almost every other night. That’s how much they loved reading Sleepy Dog, (Currently seems to be under Sleepy Dog, Wake Up!), a Step 1, Step into Reading book authored by Harriet Ziefert and wonderfully illustrated by Norman Gorbaty. Published in 2015, it’s designed for preschoolers and is the standard 32 pages long.

It’s a simple story of a dog waking up, going about his day, and then going back to sleep. The narration is simple, uncomplicated, yet has a purposely fun cadence to it.

Middle pages of the book
Spread shows the charm of the narration and the cuteness of the imagery.

The illustrations are simple, too, primarily consisting of large pictures of the characters in pastel shades of brown, pink, green and blue.

All in all, the book waxes nostalgic for me in a huge way—sitting on the bed with your kids in your lap, reading while they point and look at the pictures and listen to every word you say. With that, Mrs. Udderbutter stamps her Hoof of Approval!

Have fun reading!
